A coffee at Leo's Beanery
"It’s great to see the graphs – when we’re busiest, different peaks and troughs, which products are selling… Something as simple as knowing how many brownies we’ve sold in a day!"
Leo has a coffee shop in Edinburgh despite never having been in it. His establishment is a posthumous homage from his grandson, Joe Denby, who opened Leo’s Beanery with his wife, Marie, in 2009, in the New Town area of the city. “It was born out of combining our passion for service, fresh food, and great coffee,” explains Marie.
After living in Australia for a couple of years, Leo’s Beanery was born with the intention to fill a gap in Edinburgh’s coffee scene. “We loved cafés over there and we couldn’t find anything we identified with. Our dream was to create somewhere we’d love to go.”
Marie always loved baking. That passion made her develop the sweet-tooth section of the business, Ted’s Bakehouse, whose name pays tribute to her late grandfather, and which also produces cakes for other coffee shops in the city: “Leo is the coffee part and Ted the bakery side.”
But despite everything sounding idyllic and exciting, things are sometimes tough, and Joe and Marie’s experience has been anything but easy. “At one point we thought about selling it. However, we started to gain some great staff and, thanks to their help and enthusiasm, we thought of incorporating them and growing the business.”
The company’s growth since 2015 has been dizzying. In November 2015 they teamed up their grandparents’ names into Leo & Ted, a much smaller but equally beautiful version of the original Leo’s just on the other side of Edinburgh. If that wasn’t enough, one month later they took over the café in the Dovecot Gallery, the iconic tapestry studios on Infirmary Street, now renamed Dovecot Café by Leo's.
The three places share the same passion and self-demanding level, as their Trip Advisor and Google reviews can confirm.
They have also incorporated the iZettle Pro (formerly intelligentpos) EPOS solution in each location, an easy way to control their stock and gather data for the three businesses in one common platform. Amongst the many features of the iZettle Pro system, probably the most important one for Marie is our Back Office reporting: “It’s great to see the graphs – when we’re busiest, different peaks and drops, which products are selling… Something as simple as knowing how many brownies we’ve sold in a day!”
